 The Residency Program
The Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program offers rigorous and comprehensive training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The two-year program is a balanced, closely supervised experience that is based at the Institute of Living in Hartford, CT. It is built upon an integrated continuum of care that includes experience in crisis evaluation, psychiatric inpatient and day treatment programs, outpatient clinics for the full range of child and adolescent psychiatric disorders, consultation to a variety of schools and social service systems and consultation-liaison to inpatient pediatrics at the nearby Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
Focus
The focus of the training program is to promote an understanding of the essential aspects of child and adolescent psychiatry. Residents are taught to approach patients and their families from a developmental perspective, integrating biological, psychodynamic, cognitive, socio-cultural and behavioral orientations into formulations and treatment plans. The residents experience a multi-cultural and clinically diverse patient population.
Goals
Goals of the training program are to train child and adolescent psychiatrists who are (1) competent in theoretical knowledge, clinical diagnostic and therapeutic skills, and consultation to diverse systems, (2) dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and new skills, (3) compassionate and able to use good interpersonal and communication skills and clinical judgment, (4) able to provide a leadership role in interdisciplinary work with children, adolescents, and their families, and (5) committed to the treatment of patients with uncompromisingly high ethical and professional standards.
