June 2014

Pizza and CEUs will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 7pm in JB118 of the Jefferson Building.  The topic will be the EMS Response to Active Aggressor Incidents and the speaker will be Robert Maynard of the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit.  We look forward to seeing you there!

The MDC will be closing Jefferson Street at Main Street on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 18:00 hours until at least Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 21:00 hours.  Please plan accordingly.  Attached is the MDC announcement and the detours that they have posted.

EMS Week is coming!  We are very excited about this year's activities!  Sign up for our free EMS Symposium. Join us for our annual cook out on Wednesday and new this year, join us Thursday evening for a night at the movies!  We look forward to seeing everyone during EMS Week 2014.  EMS : Dedicated for Life.

March 2014

The Department of EMS Education will be holding an EMS Instructor program starting in May 2014!  Lead instructors will be Terry Devito, EdD, and Ralf Coler, MEd.  Tuition for the program will be $1,500 and it will run through the summer.  An application will be available shortly, in the interim if you have questions about the program, please feel free to contact Ralf Coler at raffaella.coler@hhchealth.org or at (860) 545-2564. Congratulations and a job well done to the citizens of Windsor, Windsor EMS and Windsor PD!  This week a man collapsed while playing basketball at a local gym.  Bystanders immediately started CPR, called 911, retrieved an AED and performed a defibrillation.  The Windsor Police Department arrived and took over care of the patient and upon the arrival of Windsor EMS, the patient had a return of spontaneous circulation.  By the time the crew had dropped the patient off at St. Francis Hospital Emergency Department, he was awake, alert and oriented, shaking the hands of his rescuers.  Windsor EMS has recently implemented the WE CARES program to increase the survivability of out of hospital cardiac arrest.  Great job to everyone involved.

Happy New Year everyone! Just a reminder that Pizza and CEU's has a new night!  The last Thursday of the month.  January 29, 2014 will be Jerry Bardwell discussing documentation, February 27, 2014 will be John Spencer discussing how EMS can impact cardiac arrest survival rates, March 27, 2014 will be Bob Maynard talking about active shooter scenarios and April 24, 2014 will be a case review.  All of the sessions start at 7pm, contact us at EMSEducation@harthosp.org to sign up.

October 2013

There will be construction to the Retreat Street ambulance entrance to the Emergency Department.  From 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on October 24, 25, 28, & 29, 2013, the normal ambulance entrance to the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department from Retreat Street will be closed.  Instead, EMS is asked to enter through the Seymour Street exit during that time.  This driveway (behind the Conklin Building) will be reversed to allow for EMS traffic to enter.  When exiting the Emergency Department parking area, EMS will exit out the horseshoe driveway in front of the main hospital entrance.  Hartford Hospital Security and Valet services will be working to make travel through these areas as easy as possible.  Please note that these changes are only between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm on the affected days. Traffic flow on the overnight will be as normal.  

The 20th running of the ING Hartford Marathon will be this Saturday, October 12, 2013.  The Department of EMS Education will be coordinating the medical care for the marathon and we'd like you to be aware of street closures in the Hartford area during the race.  Please see the Hartford Marathon website  for complete street closure information.  For best access to Hartford Hospital during the race:

From the North or the South:

Interstate 91, to exit 29 (Capitol Area), get off of the Whitehead highway at the Columbus Blvd ramp,  Go LEFT onto Columbus Blvd, which becomes Wyllys street.  Follow Wyllys until it runs into Retreat Street and the entrance to the ED.

 From the East:

Take Interstate 291 to 91 South and follow as above from exit 29.

 From the West:

Take New Britain Ave, to Washington Street to Retreat Street to the ED entrance.

The North Central Connecticut EMS Council has updated our EMS Treatment Guidelines.  They can be found on our Medical Control page along with a Summary of Changes.  These guidelines are in effect as of July 1, 2013 and replace all other versions.

May 2013

Hartford Hospital will be celebrating EMS Week the week of May 19 to May 25, 2013.  See the link for a schedule of events.

Hartford Hospital has adopted the new cervical spine immobilization guideline that was recently disseminated by the North Central Connecticut EMS Council.  Specifically: “Patients that are ambulatory at the scene, but who require cervical spinal immobilization based on our regional immobilization guidelines, will be placed in an appropriate sized cervical collar, seated on the ambulance stretcher, secured in a position of comfort, limiting movement of the neck during the process.”

November 2012

The Department of EMS Education and the Hartford Hospital Stroke Center will be holding a Stroke CME event on Tuesday evening, December 11, 2012 at 6:00pm.  Dinner will be included.  A link to the registration is here.  Additionally the Stroke Center at Hartford Hospital will be more involved in EMS QA as we pursue accreditation as a comprehensive stroke center from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.  Please see the memo related to that here.

October 2012

The Emergency Department and the Purple Pod are reorganizing the entry of patients into the purple pod.  The procedure is outlined below.

1) Primary entrance from EMS and main ED will be through the back door adjacent to RED 5
2) Triage RN will call report to the RN using either phone # 69325 or 69322 (permanent #s)
3) The purple RN will meet EMS or triage PCA at the back door of purple and greet the patient and provide a safe and dignified entrance in to the pod.
4) This process should not change when sending patients from the main ED. 
 
This process will start @ 0700 on 10-23-12 and end @ 0700 on 10-26-12.
Please provide feedback after the process starts, email Danette and I and we can discuss the process with the purple pod staff.

The Department of EMS Education is organizing the state's EMS for Children Conference again this year.  A brochure and registration for the conference can be found here. 2012 EMS-C Conference.  There will also be a PEARS class offered as a preconference workshop 2012 PEARS Pre-Conference.

The Department of EMS Education has CANCELLED the July 26, 2012 Pizza and CME event due to the threat of severe weather.  Stay safe and we'll see everyone next month!

A new construction update has been sent out and posted today, December 16, 2011.  Please take a moment to review it.  Also, if you are looking for a long back board and do not find it in the Emergency Department, please stop by the Department of EMS Education between the hours of 9a and 3p to pick it up.  Other hours can be made available by appointment.  Thanks!

Happy Holidays!  A new construction update has been sent out and posted today, December 11, 2011 regarding phase 3 of our ED project.  Please take a moment to review it.  We would like to thank you for being considerate and turning off your engines when parked outside of the ED. 

Lastly, there are still openings in the Spring 2012 EMT programs at Hartford Hospital during the day and evening classes, as well as at the EMT program at UConn.  If you know someone who is interested in becoming an EMT, please send them our way!  Best wishes for a happy holiday season!  - The EMS Education Staff

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!  There is Construction in the Emergency Department that effects the flow of ambulances and patients through the area.  Please check out our construction update page for the most up to date information!  When completed we will have a new, expanded EMS room.

National Registry Examination
The Department of EMS Education offered two National Registry EMT Practical Exams this month for it's graduating EMT students.  Over 70 students sat for the exams over the course of one day. 
 
EMT Programs Begin
The Department of EMS Education began three new EMT programs this month, two in the evening and one during the day.

Respirator Fit Testing
The Department of EMS Education began taking over responsibility for respirator fit testing for the entire hospital staff of over 7,000 employees.  Staff members were trained as fit testers and hours for fit testing are posted on healthstream.  Employees who have never been fit tested before are reminded that they should be cleared by Occupational Health prior to coming for their fit test.

EMT Programs Begin
EMS Education started three EMT classes this month, an evening class at Hartford Hospital, a day class at Hartford Hospital and an evening class at the University of Connecticut.

October, 2010

State of Connecticut EMS for Children Conference
The Department of EMS Education provided the coordination of the annual EMS for Children Conference, which was held at Hartford Hospital.  Over 100 participants attended.
 
Hartford Marathon
EMS Education provided the coordination and staff for the medical tent at the Hartford Marathon, including the bike team, the main medical tent and medical staff for the massage tent and EMS coverage of the entire route.  Over 100 participants were seen by the staff.

EMS Education to Offer State of Connecticut EMT Practical Testing
The Department of EMS Education at Hartford Hospital is pleased to announce that it will be offering State of Connecticut EMT Practical Exams on a relatively frequent basis.  These exams will be open to outside participants at a cost of $75 per person or $20 per station.

EMS Education Receives Approval for Paramedic Training Program
Hartford Hospital and Goodwin College are pleased to announce that they will be offering a Paramedic Training Program starting in September 2006.  Students will have the best of both worlds, an academic preparation from a leading career training college and a strong clinical foundation from the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Northern Connecticut.  The staff of both institutions are very excited at this new venture and look forward to a very productive program.

EMS Education Staff Receive Awards from AHA
Raffaella Coler and Michael Zacchera of the Department of EMS Education were honored recently by the American Heart Association (AHA) with American Heartsaver Awards.

The awards were given in recognition of their work with the AHA and the Hartford Public Schools.  The Hartford Schools have placed AEDs in all three high schools in the city and in three of the middle schools.  Mike and Ralf organized training for teachers and staff and in the organization of emergency teams at each school. 

Training consisted of three phases, 1.  Training of faculty and staff team members in Heartsaver AED.  2.  Training 17 Health Education teachers as Heartsaver Instructors and one as an Instructor Trainer.  3.  Training of freshmen students during Health Education classes at the three high schools.  By the end of the 2003 - 2004 school year over 2,000 students will have been trained in CPR and AED using the Heartsaver in the Schools curriculum.

The awards were given in a ceremony that honored citizens who have performed CPR successfully or who implement plans to decrease morbidity and mortality form cardiac arrest.

EMS Education Receives Approval for Registered Nurse to Paramedic Training Program
The Department of EMS Education is pleased to announce that the Connecticut Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services has given it's approval to the Department's application to hold a Registered Nurse to Paramedic Training Program.
Registered Nurses with Critical Care experience, along with current ACLS and PALS certifications will be able to take the program which will lead to them becoming Nationally Registered Paramedics and licensed by the State of Connecticut as Paramedics. 

The program has been brought about through the combined efforts of Lynn Piacentini a Nurse, and Michael Zacchera and Michael Morran, both Paramedics.  The group studied the curricula from various nursing schools and compared them with the current National Standard Curriculum for Paramedics and established a curriculum to teach from for the Nurse to Medic Program.
