You can serve in many ways!

There are over 200 positions available to volunteers throughout the hospital. The majority of these positions have their hours restricted to weekdays, 8am to 5pm, although some evening and weekend positions are available.

Art for Healing
The Art for Healing program utilizes expressive arts as an outlet for stress and anxiety in the hospital setting. We will train volunteers to be a Creative Coach in assisting patients to process their experiences. Projects may include collage, writing, drawing or painting with various media or props depending on the needs of the patient. Some artistic ability is suitable but not necessary. Skill in engaging and interacting with patients from various backgrounds is required.  After training volunteers are scheduled to come in once a week for a three-hour shift.

Bed Safety Volunteer
The role of the Bed Safety Volunteer is to visit all patients who have been designated as a “Safety Risk” by the presence of a green triangle on their door.

Volunteers check patients to ensure personal items and the call bell are within reach, and makes sure patients understand how to use their call bell. Volunteers also ensure any other patients needs are met.

Book Cart
The volunteer book cart makes rounds several times a week to inpatient units and waiting rooms in the hospital. Volunteers offer books, magazines, crossword puzzles, and other printed games. All books and magazines are donated to the program and given away to the patients to keep. All types of books and magazines, in good condition are accepted in all languages.

Clerical Positions
Clerical volunteers are utilized as receptionists, assist with answering phones, and perform various clerical tasks including: mailings, filing, faxing, etc. In addition, volunteers with computer skills can be involved with various computer projects. 

Volunteers can respond to patient requests for hospitality services and delivery of Auxiliary Store items. They Assist visitors by giving directions/escorting to locations in Hartford Hospital. They can participate in "friendly visits" with patients as Patient Representative volunteers and perform some data entry.

Information Desk
Volunteers are responsible for greeting and directing patients and visitors throughout the hospital, as well as answering phones inquiries. Volunteers are scheduled on shifts of 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., and 5 p.m. - 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Keeping in Touch Program
The goal of the Keeping In Touch program is to help maintain cognitive functioning in hospitalized older adults.  Volunteers converse with patients, reminisce, read to them, play cards/games, do puzzles, listen to music, etc.  Training requires one three-hour training session conducted by the geriatrics department, and two shifts shadowing a current volunteer.   Volunteers are then scheduled to come in once a week for a three-hour shift.

Mobility is Medicine
Volunteers trained by the department of Rehabilitation ambulate patients who do not need physical therapy, but rather need encouragement and supervision to get up and walk.

No One Dies Alone
The No One Dies Alone (NODA) program at Hartford Hospital is a volunteer-centered program dedicated to providing caring bedside companionship for terminally ill patients who are alone and at the end of life.
With the support of the Nursing Staff, NODA volunteer companions are able to help provide these terminally ill patients with the most valuable of human gifts: a dignified death. After completing training volunteers are “on call” for when vigils. Volunteers schedule themselves for shifts and can come in anytime they are available around the clock.

Patient Representatives
Volunteers meet/greet new patients, introduce patients and their families to the Patient Relations program and to the Patient Bill of Rights. They offer support, act as a resource, resolve non-clinical problems, and report complaints.

Patient Transportation
Volunteers assist with transport of patients and materials throughout the institution.

Pet Therapy
Owners bring their dog in at least once a month and conduct friendly visits to patients. Facilitators are needed to escort the owner and dog to the units, assure a proper physical setting for the visit, and participate in conversation.

Provide "hands-on" healing touch and relaxation to patients in specially selected areas of the hospital.

Surgical Family Lounge
Volunteers maintain a supportive environment for families waiting for patients in surgery.  They provide updates and assistance with needs as expressed by family members.
